Solving Ground Loop Problems

Presented by Bill Whitlock, President and Chief Engineer, Jensen Transformers

What's all this stuff about video "hum bars" and "ground loops" anyway? Do they happen because the electrician messed up? Why not fix them by just disconnecting the ground pin on the power cord? Unfortunately, few electricians and equipment manufacturers know much about this murky “black art” subject. In this class, Bill Whitlock, a respected industry expert will explain the honest truth about ground loops in easy-to-understand language. For example, you'll learn why properly wired, fully code-compliant premises power wiring always creates small residual voltages between pieces of equipment. These harmlessly small voltages are the forces that drive power-line currents through signal cables, causing audio hum or buzz and video hum bars. He will also explain how to recognize the symptoms, how to efficiently locate the problem, and how to cure the problem without violating Code or putting peoples lives at risk. The real-world know-how taught in this class will enable you to avoid costly and embarrassing call-backs in applications ranging from simple video surveillance systems to complex home theater and boardroom systems.
